BAMBOO

PictureA selection of culms from the farm.
Unfairly maligned due to poor planting practices and vague horror tales of it growing through live men. If good fences make good neighbours, bamboo hedges can make angry, terrified neighbours. This needn't be. We grow and sell both running and clumping varieties, including an interesting selection of timber bamboos.

PHYLLOSTACHYS DULCIS

AKA 'Sweetshoot bamboo'. Our favourite all round bamboo. Known for it choice edible shoots, which have a flavour akin to baby corn. As an ornamental, it has timber sized culms (up to 3" in diameter) but only grows to 25' tall, making it a good choice for smaller spaces where a timber bamboo look is desired without timber bamboo height (often upwards of 50' or more). Amongst our fastest establishing bamboos, a well mulched and watered division will expand to a grove in a few short years, and quickly begin producing surplus timber and shoots for harvest.

HIBANOBAMBUSA TRANQUILLANS 'SHIROSHIMA'

Very aggressive running bamboo from the mountains of Japan. Striking variegated leaves on an upright, bushy bamboo to 15' tall. Dense foliage from the ground up makes it an excellent hedge or screening bamboo, or prune the lower leaves to give the look of a grove. Properly contained with a rhizome barrier, it is easily managed. Left unchecked, it can send shoots up 10-15' from the main grove. Tolerates part-shade to full sun. Very quick to establish, it's tendency to spread fast makes for a quick privacy screen.

PHYLLOSTACHYS AUREOSULCATA 'SPECTABILIS'

As the name suggests, a spectacular running bamboo. Less aggressive than other runners. To 20' tall rich yellow culms with a single green stripe looks like a tropical bamboo, but is fully hardy. Really stands out in the winter garden, the fresh culms flush with burgundy in the summer sun. Relatively upright growth and tight spacing between culms make this an excellent choice for hedging, or planting alongside walkways and patios.

PHYLLOSTACHYS VIVAX

True timber bamboo, up to 70' tall and 5" in diameter when mature. Fast to establish, and begins producing large shoots relatively fast. Only drawback is thin walled culms tend to snap during heavy snow loads, but these are soon replaced by fresh shoots in the spring. The shoots of this variety are edible and good after soaking.

PHYLLOSTACHYS GLAUCA 'YUNZHU'

AKA "Leopard Bamboo". Smaller timber variety from China. 20-30' tall with a culm diameter of 2.5" at maturity. Long graceful leaves on a vigorous plant. Culms emerge green and develop dark brown/black spots and splotches as they age (hence the name "leopard bamboo"). Quick to establish. Has a tendency to flop badly at first, but grows upright over time as larger culms develop.
